Demos of the interoperability tools to agency executives won VA and DoD contracts.
The problem
Health data sits in formats that don't connect: C-CDA, HL7 v2, legacy Oracle databases, custom payer models. Every new source-to-app link adds its own integration. Adapters to one standard cut that to one connection per system.
The build
Blue Button 2.0 access for CMS data: OAuth2 authorization, CMS registration for client organizations, scheduled pulls of Medicare Part A and B claims weekly and Part D monthly, and an admin portal for audit. Military Health System records for Leidos: legacy data mapped to US Core, with a FHIR resource engine and API gateway over a legacy Oracle database, plus a FHIR gateway and custom connectors linking Cerner and Leidos. A dual-eligible Medicare and Medicaid proof of concept for CNSI on FHIR R4 and SMART on FHIR. For UPMC: CMS claims inside its patient viewer, allergy records harmonized across Cerner and Epic, and access control and API management for its hcOS platform. Converters (CDA to FHIR, C-CDA to Blue Button JSON, bulk CSV to FHIR for Ayasdi) and a medication consolidation engine that matches provider requests to patient statements with clinical rules.
Key calls
Demoed the tools to agency executives.
Those demos won VA and DoD contracts.
Scoped the BCBSNC engagement.
For Blue Premier, BCBSNC's value-based care program: FHIR for exchange, a common claims and clinical model for storage, and about 80% of provider fields mapped to FHIR STU3.
